Acne, a widespread skin condition, affects millions globally, with up to 95% of individuals aged 11 to 30 in the UK experiencing it, as reported by the NHS. Despite its prevalence, acne often lacks adequate attention. Its psychosocial and economic impact is substantial, diminishing the affected person’s quality of life and incurring both direct and indirect economic costs. Acne can lead to lower self-esteem, negative body image, and challenges in forming social bonds, potentially causing reclusiveness and social phobia.

Beyond the psychological toll, acne may negatively influence academic and work performance, as individuals may avoid educational or workplace settings due to the condition. Job applications for acne patients may be less successful, with confidence playing a crucial role alongside potential employer biases related to physical appearance. Complications such as scarring are common, necessitating costly cosmetic procedures.

Antibiotic treatment, required in 20-30% of cases, has limitations, including a lengthy duration, potential bacterial resistance, and side effects such as the disruption of the skin microbiome. A promising alternative to antibiotics are bacteriophages, special harmless viruses that only target and kill certain bacteria. Our new prototype product — a dissolving microneedle patch loaded with phages against the bacteria causing acne — offers an effective non-antibiotic acne management solution. This innovation aims to address the medical, societal, and economic aspects of acne, providing a valuable and inclusive solution to acne management.
